Role Overview

Oxfam in Malawi is seeking a results-oriented individual to fill the position of Temporary Public Health Promoter Officer. This role is crucial for the swift implementation of lifesaving interventions in response to the recent cholera outbreak emergency in Chikwawa and Nsanje Districts. The cholera outbreak, initially confirmed in March 2022 in Machinga District, has since spread across all districts in the country, affecting over 58,000 people and claiming over 1,700 lives. The project, funded by UNICEF, aims to block the spread of cholera by implementing Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) interventions using the Community Led Sanitation (CLTS) approach. This rapid response project is designed to run from September 15, 2023, to November 15, 2024.


Key Responsibilities

As a Public Health Promotion Assistant, you will be responsible for the following tasks:

  1. Data Collection and Needs Assessment:
    • Collect and record basic needs assessment data from communities under supervision.
    • Analyze data to identify key areas of intervention.
  2. Implementation of CLTS:
    • Lead and support the implementation of Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) on the ground.
    • Engage with communities to enhance latrine coverage and improve WASH/hygiene behaviors.
  3. Facilitating Focus Group Discussions (FGDs):
    • Facilitate, document, and report on Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with community members.
    • Use FGDs to gather insights and feedback for improving project interventions.
  4. Community Action Plans:
    • Discuss and orientate community action plans to design an effective WASH program.
    • Ensure community involvement and ownership in the planning and execution of WASH activities.
  5. Communication:
    • Communicate effectively in the local language to ensure clear understanding and participation.
    • Provide information for inclusion in reports to stakeholders and funders.
  6. PHP Activities Development:
    • Assist in the development and implementation of Public Health Promotion (PHP) activities.
    • Collaborate with the PHP team to create work plans and set targets.
  7. Technical Collaboration:
    • Collaborate with Public Health Engineers (PHEs) in latrine design, water point location, and addressing technical challenges.
    • Ensure community preferences and technical feasibility are considered in all designs.
  8. Work Plan Development:
    • Develop work plans in coordination with the PHP team.
    • Monitor and report on the progress of implemented activities.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Minimum qualification of a diploma in Environmental Sciences, Public Health Promotion, or any other related field.

Experience and Skills:

  • Prior knowledge of public health, communication, or community development.
  • Demonstrated accountability to partners and disaster-affected communities.
  • Ability to make autonomous decisions in a fluid environment.
  • Understanding of when to make decisions independently and when to involve others.
  • Focus on delivering timely and appropriate results using available resources.
  • Leadership skills and experience in leading teams in the field.
  • Innovative thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication and listening skills.
