Background
UN Women is dedicated to eliminating discrimination against women and girls, empowering women, and achieving equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action, and peace and security. Rooted in the vision of equality enshrined in the United Nations Charter, UN Women leads and coordinates UN system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action globally.
UN Women’s triple mandate and its unique capacity allow it to:
- Support Member States in strengthening global norms and standards for gender equality and women’s empowerment.
- Promote coordination and coherence across the UN system to enhance accountability and results for gender equality.
- Undertake operational activities to support Member States in translating global norms into legislation, policies, and strategies.
Since its inception in 1997 in the State of Palestine, UN Women has played an innovative and catalytic role. The work of UN Women for 2023-2025 aligns with three outcomes of the Palestine United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF):
- Palestinians have greater access to inclusive, resilient, and sustainable economic opportunities.
- Palestinians have equal access to sustainable, gender-responsive social services, social protection, and affordable utilities.
- Palestinian governance institutions are more democratic, rights-based, inclusive, and accountable.
UN Women’s three-year Strategic Note supports achieving measurable results in governance, women’s economic empowerment, ending violence against women and girls, and women’s peace and security.
