Background

UN Women is dedicated to eliminating discrimination against women and girls, empowering women, and achieving equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action, and peace and security. Rooted in the vision of equality enshrined in the United Nations Charter, UN Women leads and coordinates UN system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action globally.

Myanmar is facing a compounded crisis affecting increasing numbers of its population. In 2024, the Humanitarian Response Plan indicated that about 18 million people need humanitarian aid. UN Women contributes to the yearly Humanitarian Needs Overview and Humanitarian Response Plan to ensure humanitarian action is gender-responsive, addressing the needs and priorities of women, girls, men, and boys in all their diversity.

UN Women, with the support of an International Consultant, developed the Gender in Humanitarian Action (GiHA) training manual and reference tool guide. These materials provide gender-responsive technical assistance to various stakeholders, ensuring effective gender mainstreaming in humanitarian action. To bridge the communication gap and enhance understanding at the community level, it is crucial to translate these materials into Myanmar language.

Duties and Responsibilities

The consultant will work under the direct supervision of the Programme Specialist GRG, with the support of the International Consultant and Programme Officers, UN Women Myanmar. The tasks and deliverables include:

Translation of Training Materials:

Translate GiHA training materials, standard tools, and PowerPoint slides from English to Myanmar language.
Inform UN Women of the progress regularly.

Deliverables and Timeline:

Draft Translation:

Handout
Facilitator Guide
PowerPoint slides
Due: 12 July 2024
Payment: 50% upon submission of draft translation

Final Draft of Translation:

Incorporate feedback and make necessary amendments.
Due: 23 July 2024
Payment: 30% upon acceptance of the final draft

Submission of Final Translated Documents:

Submit the final, clean version incorporating all review comments.
Due: 31 July 2024
Payment: 20% upon acceptance of the final translated materials

Consultant’s Workplace and Official Travel:

The consultancy is home-based, providing online services.

Facilitator Guide (44 pages, 10,545 words)
Handouts (63 pages, 15,119 words)
PowerPoint slides (124 slides, 4,023 words)
Total assignment duration is 28 working days from 24 June to 31 July.

Required Skills and Experience

Education and Certification:

At least a bachelor’s degree in a related field.

Experience:

Minimum of 4 years of professional experience in English-Myanmar-English interpretation and/or translation services, preferably for UN agencies or other development organizations.
Familiarity with Gender in Humanitarian Action (GiHA), humanitarian core principles, human rights, and gender terminology.
Fluency in both English and Myanmar language is required.
