Key Responsibilities
The Communications Manager will play a critical role in advancing the mission of World Vision Uganda by leading the development and implementation of communication strategies that enhance our visibility and influence. This role requires a dynamic and strategic individual who can manage multiple tasks, build relationships with key stakeholders, and effectively communicate World Vision’s impact and values.
Strategy and Management
- Strategic Development: Lead the strategic development and contextualized implementation of the partnership communications Ignite Framework. This includes identifying key communication goals, audiences, and strategies to achieve these objectives.
- Business Plan/Strategy: Develop, update, and manage the implementation of the World Vision Uganda (WVU) communications business plan/strategy. This plan should align with the overall organizational goals and priorities, ensuring that communication efforts are integrated and cohesive.
- Cross-Functional Plans: Develop and manage cross-functional communication plans in coordination with relevant divisions. This involves working closely with other departments to ensure that communication efforts support broader organizational initiatives and goals.
- Relationship Building: Build relationships with relevant communication actors (media, donors, UN humanitarian, local actors) who reach out to World Vision for inputs and opinion as a valuable expert on matters of protection of children and civilians. This includes establishing World Vision as a trusted and authoritative voice on issues related to child protection and humanitarian response.
- Reputation Management: Identify reputation risk issues and implement recovery plans, crisis communications as per World Vision Global brand guidelines. This includes monitoring potential risks, developing crisis communication plans, and ensuring timely and effective response to any issues that arise.
Media, Campaigns & Brand
- Media Relationships: Develop and maintain professional relationships with media (in coordination with regional communications and Support Offices for international media). This involves proactively engaging with journalists, providing timely and accurate information, and building a positive image of World Vision in the media.
- Social Media Guidance: Ensure WVU field staff are aware of and understand World Vision social media guidance. This includes providing training and resources to staff to effectively use social media to communicate our work and engage with stakeholders.
- Spokesperson Duties: Act as a spokesperson for media when needed and train internal spokespersons/champions. This involves preparing for media interviews, delivering key messages, and ensuring consistent and accurate communication.
- Media Monitoring: Monitor news and sector coverage concerning or affecting World Vision Uganda, including reports from local language media outlets. This involves staying informed about relevant news and developments, analyzing media coverage, and identifying opportunities for engagement.
- Media and VIP Visits: Lead the facilitation of media and VIP visits to project locations within WVU. This includes coordinating logistics, preparing briefing materials, and ensuring a positive and impactful experience for visitors.
- Communication Point of Contact: Act as the NO point of contact for World Vision Support Office communication and media teams. This involves coordinating communication efforts, sharing information and resources, and ensuring alignment with broader organizational communication strategies.
- Campaigns and Public Communication: Lead on communication related to public campaigns and plans with regional office, Global Centre and Support Office guidance and alignment for marketing, advocacy, and fundraising purposes. This includes developing campaign strategies, creating content, and coordinating outreach efforts.
- Brand and Style Management: Manage and coordinate understanding of and adherence to brand and style guidelines. This involves ensuring that all communication materials reflect the World Vision brand and are consistent with organizational standards.
Capacity Building, Internal Coordination, and Collaboration
- Training and Development: Develop and deliver communication capacity building training to World Vision staff and with relevant implementing partners. This includes creating training materials, conducting workshops, and providing ongoing support to staff to enhance their communication skills.
- Partner Coordination: Strategically plan and improve partners’ coordination, communication, and support to facilitate high donor deliverables. This involves working closely with partners to ensure effective communication and collaboration, and to maximize the impact of our joint efforts.
- Resource Development: Coordinate with the WVU resource development/grants/partnership manager and Support Offices to strategically plan for capacity building needs and develop appropriate materials towards generating funding. This includes identifying funding opportunities, developing proposals, and creating materials to support fundraising efforts.

Content Management
- Multimedia Production: Manage the production of multimedia resources, both through field level and partnership level support. This includes overseeing the creation of videos, photos, and other multimedia content to showcase our work and impact.
- Written Materials: Manage the production of written materials including stories and reports (annual report, capacity statements, etc.). This involves writing, editing, and ensuring the quality and accuracy of all written content.
- Child Participation: Ensure materials produced contribute to the positioning of World Vision in Uganda and have meaningful child participation, wherever possible. This includes involving children in the creation of content and ensuring their voices are heard.
- Freelance and Consultant Coordination: Contribute to the recruitment and use of freelance and consultant capacity to produce the resources above, where needed. This involves identifying and hiring external resources to support content creation.
- Content Requests and Updates: Manage all requests and updates from World Vision Support Offices, Global Centre, and others on StoryHub/Content Flow and communication coordination channels/systems. This involves coordinating content requests, managing workflows, and ensuring timely and accurate delivery of materials.
- Visibility Opportunities: Keep abreast of all World Vision International (WVI) visibility opportunities being an active member of the WVI MSTeams groups and channels. This includes staying informed about opportunities for visibility and promotion, and actively participating in relevant discussions and initiatives.
- Internal Communication: Manage the internal WV Uganda communications channels with staff, including social media analysis reports and other impact metrics needed. This involves overseeing internal communication efforts, ensuring staff are informed and engaged, and tracking the impact of our communication efforts.
People Management
- Workload Management: Effectively manage the workload of direct report(s). This includes setting priorities, delegating tasks, and ensuring that work is completed on time and to a high standard.
- Performance Management: Ensure performance plans and reviews are conducted periodically for staff within the unit. This involves setting performance goals, providing feedback, and conducting regular performance reviews.
- Team Support: Support individual team member(s) in achieving their performance management and learning goals. This includes providing guidance, mentoring, and professional development opportunities.
Knowledge / Qualifications for the Role
Required Professional Experience
- At least five years’ experience in communications or journalism, with at least two years’ experience working within an INGO.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to facilitate the collection of photo, video, story, and social media resources.
- Ability to work in difficult, insecure, and stressful conditions.
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically, research, manage workload, and meet deadlines.
- Proven field communications experience in emergency settings and/or fragile contexts.
- Proven ability to lead a team.
- Excellent networking, relationship building, and people management skills.
- Excellent spokesperson skills.
- Full adherence to World Vision Child Protection, Code of Conduct, and Conflict of Interest policies.
Required Education, Training, License, Registration, and Certification
- Bachelor’s Degree in journalism, media and communications, or another related field.
Preferred Knowledge and Qualifications
- Photography and filmmaking skills are highly desirable.
- Journalism experience is highly desirable.
- Understanding of the NGO sector is a desirable advantage.
