Responsibilities of the Research Associate
As a Research Associate, you will play a pivotal role in managing and running sponsored research programs within the JTL Urban Mobility/Transit Lab. Your responsibilities will include:
- Project Management: Overseeing the execution of research projects, including managing contracts and deliverables with external sponsors.
- Research and Publication: Contributing to the development of academic papers and industry reports based on research findings. This involves conducting thorough literature reviews, data analysis, and collaborating with team members on writing and editing.
- Proposal Development: Leading the preparation of proposals for funding from both internal MIT sources and external organizations. This includes identifying funding opportunities, crafting compelling narratives, and ensuring alignment with research goals and sponsor requirements.
- Student Mentorship: Advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students involved in research projects within the lab. This includes providing guidance on methodologies, data analysis techniques, and academic writing.
- Collaboration and Networking: Engaging with stakeholders across MIT and external partners to foster collaborations and advance research initiatives in urban mobility and transit policy.
Required Qualifications
To succeed in this role, candidates should possess the following qualifications:
- Educational Background: A masterβs degree or higher in civil/traffic engineering, urban planning, computer science, operations research, or a related field.
- Experience: At least three years of relevant experience in civil/transportation engineering, urban planning, computer science, operations research, or a related discipline. Experience with spatial and network analysis, optimization, machine learning, statistical, econometric, or other relevant methods is highly desirable.
- Research Expertise: Demonstrated interest and expertise in transit-centric topics, including transit policy, planning and operations improvement strategies, and/or active mode or new mobility services. Experience presenting research findings at industry conferences or through academic publications is preferred.
- Skills: Strong analytical skills and proficiency in relevant software tools for data analysis and modeling. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential, with the ability to effectively communicate complex ideas and findings to diverse audiences.
