Duties and Responsibilities
Org. Setting and Reporting
UN-Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, is tasked with promoting socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. Its goal is to ensure adequate and affordable housing for all. To achieve this, UN-Habitat works with organizations across all levels, including government bodies, civil society, and the private sector, to build, manage, plan, and finance sustainable urban development initiatives.
Within UN-Habitat, the Land Housing and Shelter Section plays a pivotal role in:
- Supporting the New Urban Agenda partners and governments in formulating and implementing progressive housing sector reforms, policies, programs, and legislation.
- Contributing to the creation of inclusive and sustainable cities that comply with international law relating to the right to adequate housing.
- Offering expertise for sound analysis of the housing sector, particularly reviewing legislation and elements affecting affordable housing.
- Assisting governments in policy formulation and implementation, aiming to maximize the impact of housing on national socio-economic development and sustainable urban growth.
- Providing in-depth local diagnosis of housing sector conditions and technical support for sustainable housing policies.
- Promoting slum upgrading approaches aligned with the New Urban Agenda, SDGs, and other international goals, particularly in ACP countries.
- Addressing urban poverty through strategic planning approaches for participatory and inclusive decision-making towards broader urban transformation.
Responsibilities
Under the guidance of the Programme Officer within the Land Housing and Shelter Section, the Data Analytics Intern will undertake the following responsibilities:
- Research Support: Conduct in-depth research on issues related to informal settlements and slums in the SADC (Southern African Development Community) region. This includes gathering, analyzing, and synthesizing relevant data and literature to inform policy and strategy development.
- Socio-economic Analysis: Assist in the socio-economic analysis of trends and developments within the SADC region. This involves identifying key socio-economic indicators, assessing their implications, and contributing to comprehensive reports.
- Analytical Content Production: Support the production of analytical content by consolidating inputs from various sources, capturing knowledge, and documenting case studies. This will contribute to the development of substantive chapters and sections of reports and strategy documents.
- Strategy Formulation: Assist in the formulation of a regional strategy addressing informal settlements. This includes drafting initial inputs, preparing topical contributions, and organizing content into coherent chapters.
- Design Process Support: Provide support in all areas of strategy design, from agenda building and policy development to implementation and evaluation. This holistic involvement ensures a thorough understanding of the strategy formulation process.
- Facilitation and Coordination: Aid in facilitating the Technical Working Group (TWG) by organizing meetings, workshops, and stakeholder engagements. This includes preparing correspondence, documenting proceedings, and following up on action points.
- Additional Tasks: Support any other research, policy, or strategy-related tasks as required, ensuring flexibility and adaptability in addressing emerging needs.
Qualifications/Special Skills
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
- Graduate Enrollment: Be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
- Final Year Enrollment: Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelorβs level or equivalent).
- Recent Graduate: Have recently graduated with a Bachelorβs, Masterβs, PhD, or equivalent degree.

Skills and Competencies
Essential Skills:
- Data and Statistical Analysis: Proficiency in data analysis techniques and statistical methodologies is required. Applicants should provide examples demonstrating their expertise in handling large datasets and deriving meaningful insights.
- Statistical Software Proficiency: Experience with statistical software packages such as STATA, R, or Python is essential. Candidates should illustrate their ability to utilize these tools for data manipulation, analysis, and visualization.
- Computer Literacy: Familiarity with standard software applications, particularly the Microsoft Office Suite, is mandatory. This ensures effective document preparation, presentation creation, and data management.
