The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is currently seeking dynamic and highly motivated Research Analysts (RAs) to join its team. The selected candidates should possess strong quantitative and analytical skills and have a proven ability to work both independently and as part of a team. The Research Analyst will provide critical support for a range of tasks, including data gathering, econometrics, economic analysis, and programming for high-quality analysis. This is a contractual position for one year, which may be renewed for up to four years, contingent on business needs and performance.

The Research Analyst role is integral to the IMF’s objective of providing economic analysis and managing information technology systems that support the organization’s initiatives. The successful candidates will focus on compiling statistical data, performing econometric techniques, and maintaining cross-country databases to support IMF research efforts. This position is specifically open to candidates residing in the Metropolitan Washington, D.C. area.

Job Summary:

As a Research Analyst, the incumbent will provide essential support to the department’s objectives by analyzing and computing statistical and economic data. This analysis will underpin the department’s research projects, publications, and policy recommendations. The RA will also manage the Fund’s databases and contribute to reports and papers that support the IMF’s global economic initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Data Compilation and Analysis:
    • Gather statistical data from multiple sources and evaluate alternative data sources for consistency and reliability.
    • Perform econometric calculations and create summary analyses that include tables and charts for various reports.
  2. Database Management:
    • Develop and maintain comprehensive cross-country databases, ensuring they meet Fund-wide data management requirements.
    • Collaborate with colleagues to update and ensure consistency across large data sets.
  3. Econometric and Statistical Analysis:
    • Write, update, and execute computer programs for statistical and econometric analysis.
    • Conduct detailed econometric work to support research papers and reports within the department.
  4. Research Participation:
    • Participate in divisional or departmental research projects and contribute analytical insights to the production of reports, papers, and publications.
    • Occasionally participate in departmental missions and interact with country authorities, academia, or financial institutions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Finance, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Science, or any related quantitative field. Master’s degree candidates in a relevant field are preferred.
  • Two years of relevant work experience in a similar role, which involves the analysis of economic or statistical data sets.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, including basic functions and formulas.
  • Proficiency in the use of analytical, statistical, and econometric software packages, such as STATA, EViews, R, TSP, SPSS, Matlab, and SAS.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with finance, budgeting, macroeconomic data, and writing macroeconomic research reports.
  • Knowledge of visual presentation tools such as PowerPoint, Excel charts, Tableau, Keynote, and Prezi.
  • Familiarity with database management tools like Power BI, SQL, MS Access, and IBM Cognos BI.
  • Proficiency in Python, C++, or similar programming languages.

  • Confidentiality: Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and integrity.
