The G7 CONNEX Initiative, launched at the 2014, aims to enhance the ability of resource-rich countries to negotiate fair and sustainable agreements with international investors in the sectors of mining and infrastructure. The initiative focuses on supporting partner governments to maximize national benefits, protect local communities, and attract responsible investments.
GIZ Hiring Legal Trainee for the CONNEX Support Unit
As part of the Global CONNEX Project at GIZ, the CONNEX Support Unit provides essential support for governments, ensuring that they are equipped with the necessary tools, expertise, and guidance to engage in effective negotiations. This multi-disciplinary support focuses on building institutional structures, advising on legal frameworks, and offering tailored assistance in the contract negotiation process.
In this full-time role, you will help advance the initiative by assisting with the strategic direction, governance structure, and offering legal insights for the development and implementation of projects related to sustainable infrastructure and resource management.
Your Tasks
In your role as a Legal Trainee, you will be entrusted with several impactful tasks, including:
1. Supporting Governance and Strategic Development

You will support the revision and improvement of the governance structure of the CONNEX Support Unit, ensuring it meets evolving demands.

Assist in developing strategic plans to ensure the effective functioning of the GIZ CONNEX project and alignment with global development goals.
2. Legal Advisory and Project Support

You will be involved in providing legal advice on matters concerning project development, contract negotiations, and association law.

You will help navigate legal complexities that arise in international collaborations, particularly related to the resource sector and infrastructure development.
3. Research and ESG Analysis

Conduct project-specific research and analysis, particularly focusing on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria.

Help to conceptualize ideas on the social and ecological impact of resource projects, and evaluate the potential outcomes of proposed infrastructure developments.
4. Event Organization and Knowledge Management

You will assist with the organization of events, including CONNEX Advisory Committees, ensuring seamless logistics and communication.

Support in recording meeting minutes, compiling reports, and maintaining knowledge management systems to enhance organizational learning.
Your Qualifications
To be considered for this exciting opportunity, you should meet the following requirements:

Education: You have successfully completed the First State Examination in Law and are currently in the legal preparatory service (Rechtsreferendariat).

Experience: You possess practical or academic experience in development cooperation or international collaboration.

Sector Knowledge: Ideally, you have a background in resource management, infrastructure, or business and human rights, particularly ESG criteria.

Skills: You are detail-oriented, with strong time management skills and the ability to handle complex tasks independently.

Languages: You have excellent written communication skills in German and English; proficiency in French or Spanish is an advantage.
