Amnesty International, a leading voice in the global fight for human rights, is currently recruiting a new International Board Member – Fundraising. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced fundraising professional to contribute to Amnesty’s mission at the highest level of governance.
As part of the nine-member International Board, you will play a pivotal role in setting Amnesty International’s strategic direction, ensuring sound governance, and helping the organization meet its long-term fundraising and development goals in a challenging global context.

Amnesty is seeking a Board Member who brings fundraising leadership and strategy experience, whether from the nonprofit or private sector, to help guide the organization through evolving global fundraising landscapes.
This Board-level position is ideal for senior professionals who have led successful fundraising efforts and who understand the importance of donor engagement, strategic resource allocation, and ethical fundraising practices. While based remotely, the role provides significant international exposure and influence across Amnesty’s 70+ country operations.

Tasks & Responsibilities
As an International Board Member, you will collaborate with fellow Board colleagues, Amnesty’s Secretary General, and senior leadership to deliver on Amnesty’s strategic goals. Your key responsibilities include:
Governance & Strategy

Set and monitor the organization’s global strategic direction
-
Uphold Amnesty International’s Articles of Association, the International Statute, and relevant UK charity laws
-
Provide high-quality, independent fiduciary oversight of resources
-
Ensure transparency, accountability, and effective decision-making
-
Support and evaluate the performance of the Secretary General
Fundraising Strategy & Oversight
-
Review and approve global fundraising strategies and plans
-
Provide oversight on major gift cultivation, grant funding, donor engagement, and digital fundraising innovation

Offer strategic counsel on donor stewardship and relationship-building
-
Evaluate fundraising performance metrics and recommend improvements
-
Promote ethical fundraising practices and compliance with international standards
Risk Management & Ethics

Help identify and manage financial, reputational, and governance risks

Ensure alignment of fundraising strategies with Amnesty’s ethical and mission-driven values

Champion diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) within the organization and among donors
Qualifications: Education & Certification
There are no formal academic degree requirements for this role, but the successful candidate will typically have the following:

A track record of leadership in fundraising for an international nonprofit or commercial organization

Familiarity with nonprofit governance, particularly in a board, trustee, or senior executive capacity

Proficiency in English (the working language of the Board)

Knowledge of additional languages — especially French or Spanish — is highly desirable
Experience: What Amnesty Is Looking For
To be considered, applicants should have substantial, senior-level experience in fundraising, especially within complex or international organizations. Desired experience includes:

Developing and overseeing multi-channel fundraising campaigns

Managing major gifts, institutional grants, and strategic donor partnerships

Building strong relationships with philanthropists, corporate sponsors, government donors, and grassroots supporters

Experience in digital fundraising strategies is a significant asset

Proven ability to analyze fundraising data, assess outcomes, and pivot strategies accordingly

Leadership experience in diverse, multicultural environments

High ethical standards and a commitment to inclusive leadership
This is a governance role — ideal candidates will bring experience reviewing organizational health metrics, advising executive leadership, and challenging organizational decisions when necessary in a diplomatic, constructive way.

Travel & Time Commitment
