If you’re an expert in digital transformation, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, or civic tech—and want to apply your experience to support human rights—you may be the next International Board Member for Technology and Innovation.

This is a unique governance-level opportunity to help guide Amnesty International’s mission globally. The part-time role requires an average of just 2–4 days per month and offers modest remuneration and full reimbursement for travel expenses.

 Background & Job Description

Amnesty International is seeking dynamic individuals to join its International Board, which provides leadership, oversight, and strategic direction to the global movement. These Board members are key figures in ensuring that Amnesty delivers on its commitment to defending human rights worldwide.

This particular opening seeks a technology and innovation expert with either non-profit or commercial sector experience. The successful candidate will help Amnesty remain at the forefront of responsible tech governance while safeguarding digital rights in a rapidly changing world.

As a Board member, you’ll collaborate with leaders from across continents and sectors, shaping global strategies that reinforce Amnesty’s vision of freedom, equality, and justice for all.


 Tasks & Responsibilities

As an International Board Member for Technology and Innovation, you will:

  • Guide Amnesty through emerging tech opportunities and challenges.

  • Provide oversight of digital transformation strategies, including AI, big data, and automation.

  • Evaluate and advise on cybersecurity measures and digital risk mitigation.

  • Shape governance strategies related to civic tech, online human rights, and surveillance.

  • Serve on governance committees and help appoint and oversee the Secretary General.

  • Provide independent fiduciary oversight of financial, reputational, and legal risks.

  • Ensure Amnesty complies with UK company law, charity law, its Articles of Association, and international statutes.

  • Contribute to policy development on safeguarding, transparency, and organizational health.

  • Represent Amnesty internationally and diplomatically as needed.

  • Ensure strong performance metrics and strategy accountability for the International Secretariat.


 Qualifications: Education & Certification

There are no formal degree requirements for this role. However, strong qualifications include:

  • Demonstrated leadership in technology, digital innovation, or cybersecurity.

  • Experience advising on tech-related strategy in global, cross-cultural contexts.

  • Prior Board experience is welcome but not required.

  • A deep understanding of international human rights, civic technology, and the ethical use of emerging technologies.


Experience: What Amnesty Is Looking For

Applicants should have a strong professional background in one or more of the following:

  • Digital Transformation: Leading major systems or tech-based change initiatives.

  • Artificial Intelligence & Data Governance: Expertise in AI, machine learning, big data, or predictive analytics.

  • Cybersecurity & Information Resilience: Strong understanding of protecting digital infrastructure and combating disinformation.

  • Technology for Civil Society: Working with tools that expand civic space, mobilize communities, or support advocacy.

  • Cross-Cultural Collaboration: Working across geographies, cultures, or languages in diverse teams or organizations.

Amnesty particularly encourages individuals who have experience working outside of the organization and come from underrepresented regions or backgrounds. Familiarity with the human rights sector is desirable, but not essential.

Additional Information

  • Languages: Fluent English is required. Proficiency in French or Spanish is a significant asset.

  • Tenure: Board members serve three-year terms, with the possibility of renewal for a second term (maximum six years).

  • Geographic Restrictions: Current residents of Australia, Chile, Denmark, New Zealand, Thailand, and Zimbabwe are not eligible to apply this year.

  • Election Process: After the initial application, shortlisted candidates will be asked to complete a nomination form by 8 May 2025. Elections take place at Amnesty’s Global Assembly in July 2025.
