Background & Job Description
CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation is currently seeking a Chief Programmes Officer (CPO) to join its senior leadership team. This global civil society alliance brings together over 15,000 members across 189 countries, working toward defending civic freedoms and promoting inclusive democratic participation—especially in the Global South.
The Chief Programmes Officer will play a central role in leading, aligning, and strengthening CIVICUS’s programmatic vision. As a strategic leader, the CPO will guide cross-organisational efforts in advocacy, civic space research, member mobilisation, and people-centred communication.
This opportunity is ideal for a mission-driven professional with deep roots in civil society, rights-based advocacy, and international programme leadership.
Tasks

Provide strategic oversight and direction to CIVICUS’s core programmatic teams.

Align diverse workstreams including civic space monitoring, advocacy, communications, innovation, and member engagement.

Represent CIVICUS in high-level global forums, civil society platforms, and multilateral policy spaces.

Foster strategic partnerships with civil society and international organisations.

Promote inclusive leadership practices across teams.

Contribute to fundraising and donor engagement strategies to support long-term programme sustainability.
Qualifications
Education and Certification
-
A Master’s degree in social sciences, international relations, law, or a relevant field.

Equivalent experience may substitute for the academic requirement in exceptional cases.
Experience
-
Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in civil society or human rights organisations.

At least 7 years in a senior leadership role, managing teams and programmes at a strategic level.

Proven ability to lead multi-disciplinary, international, and remote teams.

Experience with public representation, policy advocacy, and strategic communications.
