Background & Job Description

Disclaimer: We are not affiliated with the University of Pisa. This is a third-party listing of an open research opportunity.

The University of Pisa, a historic and internationally recognized research institution, is currently inviting applications for two postdoctoral research fellowships in the field of molecular biology and biophysics, focusing on cutting-edge neuroscience. The research is part of the NEMESIS projectNeurons Engineered with MagnEto-SwItches – which aims to unlock the molecular and biophysical underpinnings of neuronal mechanotransduction.

These prestigious 24-month research contracts are based in the Department of Biology and offer excellent opportunities for early-career scientists to contribute to impactful, interdisciplinary neuroscience projects. Successful candidates will participate in experimental and omics-driven research, while gaining international exposure and mentorship in one of Italy’s top academic environments.

Tasks

Each position is aligned with a specific research work package (WP) within the NEMESIS project:

Position 1 – Selection Code: CDR_bio_2025_2_1

Work Package (WP3): Investigating Molecular Mechanisms of Mechanotransduction
Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct biophysical research on single-molecule dynamics.

  • Apply fluorescence microscopy and protein-protein interaction assays.

  • Work with primary neuronal cultures and organotypic models.

  • Supervise Ph.D. students and manage lab operations.

Position 2 – Selection Code: CDR_bio_2025_2_2

Work Package (WP1): Genetic Construct Design and Expression Modulation
Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop inducible macromolecular switches.

  • Perform molecular cloning, vector construction, and recombinant protein expression.

  • Lead transcriptomics studies including spatial transcriptomics and 3D chromatin capture.

  • Provide guidance and oversight to doctoral candidates and assist in laboratory management.

Both fellowships offer a multidisciplinary environment that bridges molecular biology, biophysics, genomics, and neuroscience.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • A Ph.D. or Medical Specialization Degree in relevant fields is required.

  • Final-year Ph.D. candidates are eligible to apply if they receive their degree within six months from the date of the call’s publication.

  • Applicants with foreign degrees must provide a certificate of equivalence or declare its request at the time of application.

Experience

  • Proven experience in molecular biology techniques, such as cloning, microscopy, transcriptomics, or protein expression.

  • Prior exposure to neuroscience research, especially mechanotransduction, is desirable.

  • Strong scientific publication record (you may include up to 4 publications in the application).

  • Previous supervisory or mentoring experience in a lab environment is an advantage.
