Background & Job Description

World Vision International, a global Christian humanitarian organization, is currently seeking applications for a WASH Intern based at its Regional Office in Kigali, Rwanda. This position sits within the East Africa Regional Office (EARO) and reports directly to the Regional WASH Director. The intern will support the coordination and implementation of regional WASH programs across nine countries: Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.

The internship is designed to give aspiring professionals hands-on experience in the planning, reporting, and execution of WASH initiatives at the regional level. It includes exposure to technical documentation, stakeholder engagement, proposal development, risk mitigation, and even the opportunity to participate in international WASH networks and conferences.

This position is best suited for recent graduates or early-career professionals with academic or technical backgrounds in civil engineering, water and sanitation, public health, or environmental science.


Tasks

As a WASH Intern, you’ll be actively involved in multiple layers of program support. The role is divided across five main activity areas, each providing valuable exposure to regional operations:

1. Program Implementation & Reporting (25%)

  • Support the execution of the WASH Business Plan across the 9 target countries.

  • Assist in consolidating quarterly, semi-annual, and annual program reports.

  • Review national-level reports and compile regional data for board-level documentation.

2. Resource Acquisition & Communications (25%)

  • Collaborate with field offices to develop marketing and proposal materials.

  • Help draft a regional WASH capacity statement for donor engagement.

  • Contribute to policy briefs, case studies, and social media-friendly content.

3. Risk Management & Project Modeling (20%)

  • Assist in monitoring project risks in collaboration with the regional risk team.

  • Support the development and scale-up of WASH project models aligned with child well-being indicators.

  • Help document key project approaches for field-level training and adoption.

4. Knowledge Sharing & Advocacy (20%)

  • Participate in global WASH communities of practice.

  • Assist in organizing regional learning forums and contribute to knowledge management.

  • Co-author blogs, case studies, abstracts, and technical content for major international WASH conferences.

5. Other Duties (10%)

  • Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned by the WASH Director or team leads.


Qualifications

Education and Certification

To be considered, candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline. Accepted fields include:

  • Civil Engineering

  • Water & Sanitation Engineering

  • Environmental Engineering

  • Construction Technology

  • Public Health

  • Development Studies

  • Other WASH-related disciplines

Candidates who are registered with a professional body in their respective fields will have an added advantage.

Professional Experience

  • Previous exposure (internship, volunteering, or professional work) in WASH or public health programming is highly desirable.

  • Passion for environmental health, sanitation infrastructure, and behavioral change is essential.

  • Experience working on donor-funded or community-based projects will be considered an asset.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Strong report writing and documentation skills

  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, WaterCAD, GIS, and Civil 3D is highly desirable

  • Knowledge of digital tools like mWater combined with GIS systems is a major plus

  • Capacity to support planning, budgeting, and BOQ development
