In partnership since 2017, the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) and the World Bank Africa Region Chief Economist’s Office (AFRCE) offer the prestigious Visiting Scholars Programme for researchers working on economic policy in Sub-Saharan Africa. Each year, up to three AERC researchers are selected to spend 4 to 6 months at the World Bank headquarters working with the AFRCE team.

The program aims to:

• Deepen AERC–World Bank collaboration in economic research and policy analysis

• Support high-quality research with regional relevance

• Enhance individual researchers’ capacity and output through mentorship and access to Bank data and resources

During the fellowship, scholars integrate into AFRCE-led flagship studies, produce research papers, and interact closely with Bank staff and global academic networks.

Tasks

Fellows are expected to:

• Join the AFRCE team, attending meetings, contributing to analytical discussions, and learning from World Bank staff

• Revise a draft working paper—ideally for submission to the World Bank Working Paper Series or a high-ranking academic journal

• Conduct a seminar presenting their research findings within the Bank

• Participate in the AFRCE’s flagship analytic work relevant to African economic policy

• Build a repository of research interests and connections with policymakers and researchers

• Fulfill all contractual obligations per AERC and World Bank guidelines

Education & Certification

• Must be an AERC network researcher, including members of the Collaborative PhD Programme (CPP) or faculty at AERC-affiliated institutions

• Must have an active AERC-supported research project at interim, post-field, or final research stage
