About the Organization

The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is a crucial arm of the United Nations Secretariat, operating under the supervision of the United Nations Economic and Social Council. ESCWA serves 21 Arab countries in Western Asia and North Africa, providing a collaborative platform for formulating and harmonizing sectoral policies. The commission acts as a hub for congress and coordination, expertise and knowledge, and as an information observatory. ESCWA coordinates its activities with various United Nations divisions, specialized agencies, and international and regional organizations, including the League of Arab States and the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Position Overview

This temporary position is based within the Climate Change and Natural Resource Sustainability Cluster at ESCWA. The Research Assistant will work under the overall supervision of the Cluster Lead for Climate Change and Natural Resource Sustainability and report directly to a Sustainable Development Officer.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research Support: Conduct in-depth research on climate resilience and food systems, providing analytical support and compiling data for reports and publications.
  • Data Management: Assist in the collection, processing, and management of data related to climate resilience and food systems.
  • Documentation: Prepare and maintain comprehensive documentation and records of research findings and project activities.
  • Coordination: Coordinate with other team members and relevant stakeholders to ensure the smooth execution of project tasks.
  • Reporting: Assist in drafting reports, briefing notes, and presentations on research findings and project progress.

Educational Requirements

  • Minimum Qualification: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Desirable: A first-level university degree in social sciences, environmental studies, or a related field is highly desirable.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of five years of experience in research assistance, data analysis, or related work, preferably within an international organization or a research institution.

Language Requirements

  • English: Fluency in oral and written English is required.
  • Arabic: Knowledge of Arabic is highly desirable.

Assessment

  • Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise, which may be followed by a competency-based interview.

Special Notice

  • Contract Type: This is a temporary position. The initial appointment is for a duration of six months, with the possibility of extension based on the availability of funds and satisfactory performance.
