Job Overview
As a Text-Processing Operator at UNESCO, you will work under the overall authority of the Director of the Division for Conferences, Languages, and Documents (ADM/CLD) and the direct supervision of the Chief of the English Translation Unit. Your role will be crucial in ensuring the precision, quality, and conformity of English texts with UNESCO’s established policies, protocols, and standard practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Text Review and Proofreading: Review and proofread English texts for precision, quality, and adherence to established standards. Ensure that all documents meet UNESCO’s quality benchmarks.
- Corrections and Formatting: Make necessary corrections to format, style, spelling, and grammar. Insert on-screen amendments as required.
- Document Preparation: Prepare a variety of documents including minutes of meetings, records of decisions, reports, and briefs. This includes handling complex tables, special layouts, and adapting to technological advancements, particularly in the areas of CAT tools and artificial intelligence (AI).
- Transcription and Electronic File Management: Transcribe sound files in various formats and presentations. Assemble electronic files, ensuring their proper filing, transmission, and publishing.
- Compilation of Summary Records: Compile multilingual summary records (SRs) and verbatim records (VRs) as needed.
- Guidance and Support: Provide guidance to short-term text-processing operators on UNESCO and United Nations policies, protocols, standard practices, and text processing software operations.

Required Qualifications
Education:
- Completed secondary education and/or vocational education.
Work Experience:
- At least five (5) years of relevant experience in proofreading and/or text processing, or equivalent experience. Preferably, this experience should include work in an international organization.
- Proven experience in proofreading English documents.
Skills/Competencies:
- Excellent interpersonal skills with a high level of discretion, tact, and diplomacy.
- Ability to work effectively in a team and take initiatives.
- Capability to efficiently interact with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Flexibility, adaptability, and readiness to work extended hours and adjust work priorities as needed.
- Ability to cope with technological developments and advanced knowledge of text processing software.
- Proficiency in IT and office applications, including MS Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.).
Languages:
- Proficiency in English, including excellent knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
- Good knowledge of French.
Desirable Qualifications
Education:
- Specialized training or certification in languages or a related field.
Work Experience:
- Experience within the United Nations system.
- Good knowledge of InDesign and working knowledge of Illustrator.
Languages:
- Knowledge of another official language of UNESCO (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish).
