This unique position, titled Researcher – Adolescents Menstrual Hygiene, focuses on a critical project designed to address the stigmas and challenges surrounding menstrual hygiene management (MHM) for adolescent girls. This project, in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Greek Ministry of Health, is part of Greece’s broader National Action for the Promotion of Family and Child Health for the 2023-2025 period.

In this role, the successful candidate will spearhead a mixed methods research study that will provide deep insights into the policy, legislation, and institutional landscape surrounding adolescent menstrual hygiene in Greece. The findings from this research will directly contribute to the development of a national investment case for improved policies and practices aimed at upholding the menstrual health rights of adolescent girls in Greece.

Key Responsibilities:

As the principal investigator, you will lead and oversee the entire research process. Your role will be multifaceted and involve substantial collaboration with local and international stakeholders, including UNICEF and Greece’s Ministry of Health. Your key responsibilities will include:

1. Study Oversight and Implementation: You will be responsible for ensuring the successful planning, execution, and completion of the research study. You’ll provide strategic leadership throughout the research process, ensuring high-quality standards and adherence to ethical guidelines.
2. Development of Research Methodology: The Researcher will design the study’s methodology, including creating the data collection tools such as surveys, focus group discussion guides, and key informant interview frameworks. These tools will be essential for collecting both qualitative and quantitative data to support the study.
3. Ethical Review and Protocol Development: One of the first steps will be to develop a research protocol that must undergo an ethical review. This ensures that the research is conducted with integrity, accountability, and respect for participants. Once approved, you will proceed with data collection and analysis.
4. Conducting Primary Research: Using quantitative and qualitative research methods, you will lead national surveys, organize focus group discussions, and conduct key informant interviews. This research will provide invaluable insights into the current state of menstrual hygiene management among adolescent girls in Greece.
5. Data Cleaning and Analysis: You will be responsible for all aspects of data analysis, including data cleaning and synthesis. This will involve using statistical software such as SPSS, Dedoose, or STATA to analyze large sets of data and draw meaningful conclusions that will inform future policy recommendations.
6. Drafting Reports and Executive Summaries: Once the research is complete, you will draft detailed research reports that summarize the key findings and recommendations. The reports will also include an investment case for adolescent menstrual hygiene management (MHM) in Greece, which will be used to advocate for policy reforms and resource allocation.
7. Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement: You will work closely with the Team Leader of the project and collaborate with various stakeholders, including UNICEF and the Ministry of Health, to ensure the research aligns with the country’s broader health and social goals. You will also play a key role in organizing and participating in policy roundtables where you will present findings and discuss best practices.
8. Research Dissemination and Advocacy: After completing the research, you will help create a research dissemination plan that ensures the findings are shared with national and international stakeholders. Additionally, you will be involved in creating an advocacy strategy to promote the uptake of your recommendations among decision-makers and local communities.

Qualifications and Requirements:

To be considered for the Researcher – Adolescents Menstrual Hygiene position, you must meet the following qualifications and experience:

• A Master’s or higher degree in Public Policy, Governance, Law, Social Sciences, Public Health, Research and Evaluation, or a related field. Alternatively, significant relevant work experience in a similar capacity will be considered.
• Proven experience in leading both qualitative and quantitative research studies is a must.
• Experience in one or more of the following fields will be considered an asset:
  • Research & Evaluation
  • Public Policy
  • Law
  • Public Health
  • Behavioral Science
  • Education
• Strong familiarity with the sociocultural context of Greece is essential, as the research will need to reflect the country’s unique cultural and social challenges.
• Fluency in Greek and English is required, as you will be engaging with local stakeholders and international partners.
• A background in adolescent health, particularly menstrual hygiene management, is a major plus.
• Strong experience with data analysis platforms like SPSS, Dedoose, or STATA.
• Proven ability to coordinate and negotiate effectively with various stakeholders and build relationships quickly in a multicultural setting.
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to present complex findings in a clear and actionable manner.
• Previous experience working with UNICEF or other international organizations would be considered a bonus.

Working Environment and Location:

• The position is based in Athens, Greece, with occasional travel to various parts of the country for data collection and stakeholder engagement.
• The role offers a hybrid work arrangement, with the flexibility to work remotely on certain days, while also participating in in-person meetings and events.
