Background & Job Description

The United Nations Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) is looking to recruit a Political Affairs Officer (P‑3) for its Mediation Support Unit (MSU) in New York. This unit is a central hub that provides technical and operational support to global mediation and dialogue efforts through the UN’s Standby Team of Senior Mediation Advisors.

As part of MSU, the Political Affairs Officer plays a pivotal role in preparing and coordinating mediation support mechanisms, ensuring readiness for peacebuilding and preventive diplomacy across regions.


Key Responsibilities (P‑3 Political Affairs Officer)

Under delegated authority and working closely with the Chief and Team Leader of MSU, your responsibilities will include:UNjobs

  1. Coordinate the Standby Team of Senior Mediation Advisors
    Oversee operational deployment of advisors, manage logistics, and uphold policy compliance in mediation efforts.

  2. Monitor & Analyze Political Trends
    Track developments in political and mediation contexts globally and deliver strategic insights to senior UN entities.

  3. Technical & Operational Support
    Assist with substantive backup for mediation processes, including fact-finding support, logistical planning, and preparing high-level meetings.

  4. Stakeholder Networking
    Liaise with UN bodies, international organizations, governments, and diplomats to coordinate policy and mediation support.

  5. Data Management & Knowledge Building
    Manage electronic databases tracking conflicts and dialogue processes; contribute to lessons learned and mediation guidance materials.

  6. Field Missions & Secretariat Services
    Participate in fact-finding and high-level meeting preparations, including those involving the Secretary-General or Deputy SG.

  7. Reporting & Visualization
    Collect and analyze data to identify patterns and trends; present findings through visual tools like charts and tables.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Political Science, International Relations, Law, Public Administration, or related field.

  • A first-level degree plus qualifying experience may substitute for a Master’s.

Experience

  • At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in political affairs, mediation, conflict resolution, or related fields.

  • Demonstrated experience providing mediation support and managing rosters of experts is required.

  • At least 1 year of field experience in conflict or post-conflict settings.

Language Skills

  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required.

  • Proficiency in another UN language (e.g., French, Arabic, Spanish) is an advantage.

Assessment

  • Candidates may undergo an assessment exercise, followed by a competency-based interview.
