Background & Job Description
The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) is a pan-African institution dedicated to catalyzing inclusive agricultural development across the continent. Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, with regional offices in 10 countries, AGRA focuses on strengthening the agricultural value chain — from seed systems and soil health to market access and nutrition — while prioritizing environmental sustainability and climate resilience.
Supported by major partners including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, and IKEA Foundation, AGRA works closely with governments, the private sector, and development organizations to drive policy change and empower millions of smallholder farmers.
Currently, AGRA is recruiting for six consulting opportunities in Kenya, Rwanda, Zambia, and South Sudan. These positions are vital to advancing climate-smart policies, gender mainstreaming, export development, legal reform, and carbon credit programs in African agriculture.
Tasks
The consultancy roles each have specific deliverables but generally include:
1. Climate Policy Expert – Kenya

Integrate Climate Vulnerability Mapping and Risk Analysis into national agricultural planning

Collaborate with government agencies, civil society, and AGRA teams

Support climate-resilient agricultural policy development using GIS and data-driven approaches
2. Individual Consultant – Support to NAEB (Rwanda)

Assist the National Agricultural Export Development Board in policy formulation

3. Gender Consultant – Zambia

Review and validate the Seeds and Plant Varieties Bill (2021) for legal compliance

Align the bill with regional and international seed regulations

Draft policy recommendations and analyze legal frameworks, especially in fragile state contexts
6. Individual Consultant – Rwanda (Avocado Carbon Credit Program)

Register households with avocado plantations for carbon credit certification

Conduct field assessments, verify data, and sensitize communities

Support climate-smart agriculture initiatives through carbon finance mechanisms

Qualifications (Education and Certification, Experience)
Education

Advanced degrees relevant to each role, such as:

Climate Policy, Environmental Science, Agricultural Economics, Gender Studies, Law, Social Sciences, or related fields

Experience

Minimum 5 to 7 years in respective disciplines (climate adaptation, export development, gender mainstreaming, legal policy, carbon finance)

Proven experience working with governments, donor agencies, or development organizations in Africa

Technical expertise in GIS and climate vulnerability tools (for climate roles)
