Background & Job Description
The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) is inviting applications for 14 project-based positions under a Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India-funded Biofoundry project. Located at the ICGEB New Delhi campus, this cutting-edge initiative focuses on AI/ML-guided strain engineering of yeast and E. coli to accelerate synthetic biology and biomanufacturing efforts.
The openings range from research-intensive roles for PhDs to hands-on laboratory and administrative positions for graduates and diploma holders. All positions are temporary and contract-based, with an initial duration of one year that may be extended depending on performance and project continuation.
Tasks
The responsibilities differ based on the position, with core tasks falling into the following categories:
For Project Scientist II (5 positions):

Build computational pipelines and machine learning models for omics data.

Design and analyze metabolic pathways in yeast and E. coli.

Perform genome editing and synthetic biology experiments.

Collaborate with wet-lab teams to optimize strain development.

Maintain databases, prepare reports, and contribute to training sessions.
For Project Associate II & I (4 positions):

Execute molecular biology and biochemical experiments.

Construct pathway genes and test engineered yeast or E. coli strains.

Use analytical tools to measure strain performance.
For Technical and Administrative Support Roles (5 positions):

Manage lab inventory, maintain analytical equipment, clean labware.

Provide technical support to scientific staff.

Handle administrative tasks such as documentation and scheduling.
Qualifications
Project Scientist II
Education & Certification:
-
PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Biotechnology, Life Sciences, or related fields.
Experience:
-
Proven background in omics analysis, ML/AI, metabolic modelling.

Specialized skills in genome engineering, protein design, structural bioinformatics, or molecular dynamics (depending on role).

Publications in relevant domains are expected.
Desirable:
-
Prior work in synthetic biology, bioprocess optimization, or biofoundry projects.

Experience with HPC environments.
Project Associate II
Education & Certification:
-
M.Sc./M.Tech in Biotechnology or related fields.
Experience:

Minimum 2 years of experience in molecular biology or metabolic engineering.
Project Associate I
Education:

M.Sc./M.Tech in Biotechnology or related disciplines.
Experience:
-
No specific experience required, but relevant lab exposure is advantageous.
Project Manager
Education:

PhD in Science or ME/MTech.
Experience:

At least 5 years of experience in managing large-scale scientific projects.
Administrative Assistant
Education:

Bachelor’s degree (B.Sc. or B.A.) in any field.
Experience:

Experience in office administration is desirable.
Technical Manager
Education:

B.Sc. or a 3-year Diploma in Engineering/Technology.
Experience:

Experience in technical support or lab maintenance.
Lab Assistant
Education:

B.Sc. in any discipline.
Experience:

Basic lab maintenance and cleaning duties.
