Location: Nairobi, Kenya
Sector: Sustainable Land Use and Environmental Economics
Position Type: Integrated Expert (Fixed-Term, 2 years with possible extension)
About ICRAF and CIFOR:
Since 1978, the World Agroforestry Center (ICRAF) has been at the forefront of research on sustainable land use with trees in tropical and subtropical regions. Together with the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), ICRAF generates and disseminates knowledge on the critical role of trees in addressing global challenges such as climate change, food security, biodiversity loss, poverty alleviation, soil fertility, and social inequality. Headquartered in Nairobi, ICRAF is a pivotal research partner in combating desertification in the Sahel and an active participant in the Great Green Wall Initiative (GGWI). ICRAF also supports the Economics of Land Degradation (ELD) Initiative, striving to mitigate global land degradation and soil fertility loss.
The integration of ICRAF and CIFOR has amplified the impact of their collective research efforts, creating a synergy that drives innovation and application in sustainable land use. Together, these organizations address pressing global issues by leveraging the ecological and economic benefits of trees. Their combined expertise contributes to the development of strategies that enhance ecosystem services, improve livelihoods, and promote resilience in vulnerable communities.
Key Responsibilities:
The role of an Environmental Economist at ICRAF is multifaceted, requiring a blend of technical expertise, strategic vision, and collaborative skills. The incumbent will be responsible for a range of duties aimed at promoting sustainable land use practices and enhancing the economic valuation of ecosystems.
- Representation and Advocacy: Represent ICRAF-CIFORβs interests in the ELD working group on the economic valuation of ecosystems and the development of sustainable, resilient land use practices. The Environmental Economist will be a key figure in promoting the importance of trees in mitigating climate change and enhancing biodiversity.
- Capacity Building: Strengthen the skills of local partner experts in applying economic analysis and evaluation methods, including tools for calculating return on investment for alternative land use systems incorporating trees. The goal is to empower local communities and organizations with the knowledge and skills needed to implement sustainable land use practices effectively.
- Economic Analysis: Conduct comprehensive economic analyses for alternative land use systems. This includes assessing the costs and benefits of different land use strategies, analyzing the economic impact of soil restoration projects, and evaluating the long-term sustainability of various approaches. The Environmental Economist will use advanced economic modeling techniques to provide insights that guide policy and practice in sustainable land management.
- Project Management: Provide technical management for specific research projects. This involves coordinating project activities, managing budgets, ensuring compliance with project timelines, and reporting on project outcomes. The Environmental Economist will work closely with other team members to ensure that research projects are implemented effectively and that they contribute to the overall goals of ICRAF and CIFOR.
- Stakeholder Networking: Engage with stakeholders from research and development sectors to promote sustainable tree use, improving economic, social, and ecological outcomes for rural, resource-poor households. This includes building partnerships with government agencies, non-governmental organizations, private sector entities, and local communities. The Environmental Economist will facilitate collaboration and knowledge exchange among these stakeholders to promote integrated approaches to land management.
