About the Program:
The Nature Crime Alliance is an influential global network committed to addressing and combating nature crime. This multi-sector alliance aims to increase political will, mobilize financial resources, and enhance operational capacities to fight against the illegal exploitation of natural resources. The alliance seeks to elevate its profile and amplify the impact of its initiatives through effective communication strategies. The role of the Communications Assistant is integral to this mission, providing support to the Communications team to bolster the Alliance’s efforts and achieve its goals.
Nature Crime: encompasses a broad range of illegal activities that harm the environment, including illegal logging, wildlife trafficking, illegal fishing, and other activities that exploit natural resources. These crimes not only cause ecological damage but also undermine legal economies and contribute to human rights abuses. The Nature Crime Alliance brings together stakeholders from various sectors, including governments, NGOs, and private enterprises, to address these challenges comprehensively.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Develop Content and Themes (30%):
- Research and Engagement: The Communications Assistant will undertake web-based research to stay updated on the latest developments in nature crime. This involves monitoring news outlets, academic publications, and reports from various organizations. Engaging with the Alliance network, including members and partners, to gather insights and identify stories of interest is a crucial part of this role. The information gathered will be used to develop compelling content that highlights the impact of nature crime and the efforts to combat it.
- Collation of Information: The role requires the ability to synthesize information from multiple sources, including meeting insights, internal reports, and external publications. This information will be used to create content that resonates with the Alliance’s audience and supports its communication goals.
2. Deliver Communications Products (30%):
- Drafting and Dissemination: The Communications Assistant will support the creation and distribution of various digital products, such as newsletters, news articles, blog posts, and social media updates. This includes drafting content, editing for clarity and impact, and ensuring consistency with the Alliance’s messaging. The goal is to produce high-quality communications that engage the audience and drive action.
- Content Creation: Creating engaging content is a key responsibility. This includes writing news articles that highlight significant achievements, drafting blog posts that provide deeper insights into specific issues, and producing social media content that sparks interest and encourages sharing. The Communications Assistant will work closely with the Communications Manager and the broader team to ensure the content aligns with the Alliance’s strategic objectives.
3. Manage Digital Channels (30%):
- Social Media Management: The Communications Assistant will help manage the Alliance’s social media channels, including X (formerly Twitter), LinkedIn, and a new Instagram presence to be launched in 2024. This involves creating and scheduling posts, engaging with followers, and monitoring the performance of social media campaigns. The goal is to increase the Alliance’s visibility, engage its audience, and drive traffic to its website.
- Website Maintenance: Maintaining the Alliance website is another important responsibility. This includes updating content, creating new pages, and ensuring the website is user-friendly and up-to-date. The Communications Assistant will work with the web development team to implement changes and improvements that enhance the user experience.
4. Event Logistics and Communications Administration (10%):
- Event Support: The role involves supporting the organization of events, including webinars, conferences, and workshops. This includes audience-building efforts, such as promoting events through various channels and managing registrations. The Communications Assistant will also provide logistical support, such as coordinating with speakers, preparing materials, and ensuring smooth event execution.
- Administrative Duties: Administrative tasks in support of the communications team include taking meeting notes, managing calendars, and coordinating with other departments. These duties ensure that the communications function runs smoothly and efficiently.

Requirements:
Education: A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Communications, Journalism, Environmental Studies) is required. Alternatively, candidates with an additional 4 years of experience in a similar role will also be considered.
Experience: The ideal candidate will have experience managing digital channels, including websites and social media. Demonstrated writing skills are essential, as is the ability to work effectively within a team. Experience in the environmental sector or a strong interest in environmental issues is highly desirable.
Skills: Proficiency in spoken and written English is required. Additional skills in design and video production are a plus, as they will enhance the ability to create engaging multimedia content.
Work Authorization: Candidates must have existing work authorization for the location where the position is based. WRI is unable to sponsor work visas for this role.
