Organizational Setting
The FAO office for Iraq is responsible for developing, promoting, overseeing, and implementing strategies that address nationwide food, agriculture, and rural development priorities. This is particularly crucial as the country transitions from an L3 to L2 Emergency status. The office collaborates closely with relevant government entities and Ministries at the national level. This position can be home-based but is linked to the operations in Iraq.
Reporting Lines
The International Communication Specialist will report directly to the FAO Representative in Iraq. They will also receive technical supervision from relevant Technical Officers at HQ/FAO-RNE and guidance from the Deputy Representative, Senior Resilience Team Leader, and Head-of-Office in Erbil, Iraq. Collaboration with colleagues and donors will be essential.
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Develop, manage, and implement communication, media, and press relations strategies in alignment with FAO and donor requirements, and in consultation with the Regional Communication Office and OCC policies.
- Edit, translate, and proofread technical and program/project progress reports in English and/or Arabic.
- Perform graphic design tasks for social media and publications.
- Assist FAOIQ in social media posting and managing publication workflows.
- Create compelling audio-visual content, including editing films, photography, and video, in close consultation with the Regional Communication Office and following OCC policies.
- Supervise and train national communications experts and guide colleagues on content generation procedures.
- Support the management of regional and local meetings, workshops, and events held in Iraq.
- Facilitate internal knowledge sharing, document best practices, and evaluate related learning.
- Review and edit official reports generated by FAO-Iraq staff and in collaboration with partners.
- Perform other duties as required.

Minimum Requirements
- University degree in communications, media relations, social studies, filmmaking, editing, or translation.
- At least five (5) years of relevant experience in communications and publications.
- Working knowledge of English and Arabic; limited knowledge of one of the other FAO languages: Chinese, Russian, Spanish, or French. Knowledge of Arabic is an asset. For PSA.SBS, working knowledge of English is sufficient.

Technical/Functional Skills
- Significant experience in communication services for prominent organizations, particularly at the international level, including media relations, online communication, and social networks, as well as direct experience in journalism.
- Proven ability in producing complex technical content for external audiences, especially in areas relevant to FAO’s mandate.
- Strong communication skills (spoken, written, public speaking, and presentation), including the ability to convey and present sensitive issues/positions.
- Experience working in multiple locations, particularly in field positions, is essential.
- Analytical skills and the ability to write clear and concise reports.
- Ability to work under pressure, handle multiple tasks in a timely manner, and meet tight deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Courtesy, tact, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.
