Background & Job Description
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is recruiting a Youth Project Junior Consultant to join its office under the Social and Human Sciences (SHS) Sector. This non-staff consultant position is part of UNESCO’s continued commitment to engaging youth as change-makers, enhancing their research capabilities, and fostering inclusive development aligned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Indonesia’s Vision 2045.
Over the past two decades, UNESCO has actively collaborated with youth across the globe by promoting youth-led initiatives, creating platforms for dialogue between young people and policymakers, and supporting capacity-building programs. One of its flagship youth programs in 2025 is the Youth as Researchers (YAR) initiative in Indonesia.
This position will play a vital role in the full lifecycle of the YAR programme—from planning and coordination to execution and reporting. The selected consultant will work closely with UNESCO Jakarta’s SHS team, university partners, youth researchers, and other stakeholders to deliver high-quality research training and outcomes. The consultant must be based for the project duration, which will range from 7 to 11 months.
Tasks
As the Youth Project Junior Consultant, you will be responsible for managing, coordinating, and delivering the full scope of the Youth as Researchers (YAR) program. Your responsibilities will include the following key tasks:
Project Coordination and Event Launch

Liaise with UNESCO staff, university partners, and youth networks to facilitate inclusive recruitment of youth participants, ensuring gender parity.

Support the design and planning of the YAR launch event, including agenda development, logistical support, and identification of speakers.
Curriculum Development and Training

Contribute to the development of the YAR curriculum, focusing on topics such as:

Social inclusion research
-
Data collection and analysis methods
-
Research science communication
-

Manage and coordinate the delivery of online training sessions for selected youth researchers.
Project Implementation and Oversight

Maintain an organized and up-to-date database of participants in line with UNESCO’s privacy standards.

Review and provide feedback on the initial and final research outputs of youth participants.

Finalize research documentation in collaboration with UNESCO and academic partners.

Support logistical and programmatic arrangements for the final “Knowledge Summit” youth camp.

Communication and Reporting

Draft and edit youth-related content for websites, press releases, newsletters, and reports.

Assist with the development of financial and narrative project reports as required by the SHS Programme Specialist.

Ensure consistent communication with the team and partners, providing regular activity updates.

Integrate a gender-balanced approach in all phases of the project, including participant selection and speaker representation.
UNESCO will cover costs for travel, visa application, terminal fares, and any mission-related field visits as needed during the consultancy period.
Qualifications
Education and Certification

A university degree in social sciences, environmental sciences, international development, or a related field is required.
Experience
-
A minimum of three years of experience working in youth engagement, youth-led programs, or related development initiatives.

Proven experience in conducting or managing research projects will be considered a significant advantage.

Extensive project coordination skills with the ability to work independently and manage diverse stakeholders.

Prior experience in Asia-Pacific, particularly in the field of youth development, is strongly preferred.

Previous collaborations with United Nations agencies or other international NGOs are desirable.
Skills and Competencies

Additional Information
This is a non-staff consultant position based at the UNESCO Jakarta Office. The consultant must be available for the full consultancy duration of 7 to 11 months.
