Background & Job Description

Amnesty International is a global human rights organization with more than 10 million supporters worldwide. Its mission is to end human rights abuses and promote justice, equality, and freedom for all. The organization conducts research, advocacy, and campaigns in nearly every country, combining powerful evidence-based reporting with direct lobbying, mass demonstrations, and online activism.

The West and Central Africa Researcher will be based in Dakar, Senegal, and will play a pivotal role in investigating, documenting, and exposing human rights violations across the region. This is an opportunity to influence Amnesty International’s regional strategy, deliver authoritative research, and strengthen the organization’s global impact.

This is a fixed-term contract for 18 months, with a 35-hour workweek and competitive benefits, including 37 days of annual leave, pension scheme, life assurance, and employee assistance programs.


Tasks

Key responsibilities include:

  • Shape and lead Amnesty International’s research agenda in West and Central Africa.

  • Monitor, investigate, and assess human rights developments across the region.

  • Conduct field missions and fact-finding in complex or crisis situations.

  • Build and maintain strong networks with civil society actors, survivors, legal experts, and decision-makers.

  • Represent Amnesty International at high-level forums, media engagements, and stakeholder meetings.

  • Draft research reports and advocacy materials that influence policy and public narratives.

  • Mentor team members and support regional research capacity-building.

  • Contribute to shaping strategic regional plans and ensure timely response to human rights abuses.


Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • Strong academic background, ideally with a university degree in human rights, social sciences, law, political science, or related fields.

  • Demonstrated expertise in human rights research is highly desirable.
