⚠️ Important Accuracy Note

The Friedrich Ebert Foundation Scholarship should not be presented as a scholarship that allows any international applicant to simply apply from abroad and then automatically receive university admission in Germany.

For the main:

FES BASIC FUNDING PROGRAMME FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

international applicants are generally expected to:

✅ ALREADY BE STUDYING AT A GERMAN UNIVERSITY

or:

Applicants also need:

GOOD GERMAN-LANGUAGE SKILLS

even when their degree programme itself is taught in English. FES currently accepts approximately:

B2 GERMAN

for international applicants.

The scholarship also:

❌ DOES NOT GUARANTEE UNIVERSITY ADMISSION

❌ DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY FUND TRAVEL TO GERMANY

❌ What Does FES Not Normally Fund?

The foundation does not normally provide funding for several categories, including:

• Short-term study programmes
• Research visits
• Trainee programmes
• University preparatory courses
• Language courses as stand-alone programmes
• Postdoctoral projects
• Pure final stages of degree programmes
• Certain medical postgraduate pathways
• Internships and summer schools
• Part-time study programmes in many cases

FES also generally does not fund programmes lasting:

LESS THAN THREE SEMESTERS.

💶 How Much Is the Friedrich Ebert Scholarship Worth?

For international scholarship holders in the basic student programme, FES currently provides:

💰 €992 PER MONTH.

This funding is intended to help scholarship holders cover living costs while concentrating on:

STUDIES

and:

SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT.

🎓 How Much Do International PhD Students Receive?

International doctoral scholarship holders currently receive:

💶 €1,500 PER MONTH.

The international doctoral scholarship is usually available for approximately:

THREE AND A HALF YEARS

although extensions may be possible in justified circumstances under programme rules.

🏥 Does FES Cover Health Insurance?

Yes, support for health-insurance costs may be available.

For international scholarship holders, FES states that:

HEALTH INSURANCE COSTS CAN BE COVERED

under the applicable programme conditions.

👶 Is There Additional Support for Students With Children?

Yes.

The current international basic-funding page states that scholarship holders with children can receive an additional:

💶 €255 PER MONTH

under the applicable childcare support arrangements.

Applicants should rely on the current German programme page because benefit amounts can change over time.

💳 Does the Scholarship Have to Be Repaid?

No.

FES explicitly states:

✅ THE SCHOLARSHIP DOES NOT HAVE TO BE REPAID.

This distinguishes it from:

STUDENT LOANS

or:

REPAYABLE EDUCATION FINANCING.

🗣️ Is German Required?

Yes.

This is one of the most important requirements for international applicants.

FES states that international applicants must demonstrate:

GOOD GERMAN-LANGUAGE SKILLS.

The current international funding page accepts:

B2 LEVEL

even without a formal language certificate in certain circumstances.

This applies:

⚠️ EVEN WHEN THE UNIVERSITY DEGREE IS TAUGHT IN ENGLISH.

Therefore, an English-taught Master’s degree does not automatically remove the FES German-language requirement.

🎯 Main Selection Criteria

FES does not select applicants based on grades alone.

The foundation focuses on three major areas.

📚 1. Strong Academic Performance

Candidates should demonstrate:

ABOVE-AVERAGE ACADEMIC RESULTS.

🤝 2. Social and Civic Engagement

Applicants are expected to be actively involved in their communities.

This might include involvement in:

NGOS

STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

COMMUNITY GROUPS

VOLUNTEERING

CHURCH OR RELIGIOUS COMMUNITIES

UNIONS

SOCIAL INITIATIVES

or other forms of community engagement.

🗳️ 3. Alignment With Social Democratic Values

Friedrich Ebert Foundation Scholarship 2026 in Germany: Fully Funded Scholarships for International Students 🇩🇪

Applicants should identify with values such as:

FREEDOM

JUSTICE

and:

SOLIDARITY.

❓ Do You Have to Be a Political Party Member?

The scholarship is associated with social democratic values, but applicants should not assume that party membership itself is automatically required.

FES places emphasis on:

VALUES

SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT

and:

DEMOCRATIC PARTICIPATION.

Its scholarship selection is broader than simple political-party membership.

🌍 Can Africans Apply?

Yes.

Students and doctoral researchers from:

AFRICAN COUNTRIES

are explicitly within the broader target group for FES’s international scholarship funding, provided they satisfy the remaining requirements.

However, international student applicants generally need to already be:

STUDYING AT A RECOGNISED GERMAN UNIVERSITY

for the basic scholarship programme.

🇿🇼 Can Zimbabweans Apply?

Potentially:

✅ YES.

Zimbabwe is an African country and therefore falls within the broad international target region identified by FES.

A Zimbabwean applicant would still need to meet requirements including:

ADMISSION / ENROLMENT IN GERMANY

ABOVE-AVERAGE RESULTS

B2-LEVEL GERMAN

SOCIAL OR CIVIC ENGAGEMENT

and:

ALIGNMENT WITH FES VALUES.

The scholarship should therefore not be advertised as a route where a Zimbabwean applicant can simply apply without first considering German university admission requirements.

🏫 Do I Need Admission to a German University?

For international student funding, applicants should already be studying at:

A GERMAN STATE

or:

STATE-RECOGNISED UNIVERSITY / UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES.

For doctoral applicants, admission to pursue a doctorate at an eligible German institution is required under the doctoral programme.

📅 When Should Bachelor’s Students Apply?

International Bachelor’s students generally need to provide:

FIRST GRADED UNIVERSITY RESULTS.

They can apply after the first semester and must generally do so sufficiently early before completing their degree.

FES states that applications should be made no later than:

THREE SEMESTERS BEFORE THE END OF THE STANDARD STUDY PERIOD.

📅 Master’s Scholarship Deadlines

For international Master’s students, FES publishes specific semester-based deadlines.

❄️ Winter Semester

Applications should be submitted by:

🚨 NOVEMBER 30

before or at the beginning of the first Master’s semester.

🌱 Summer Semester

Applications should be submitted by:

🚨 MAY 31.

Applicants should apply as early as possible rather than waiting until the deadline.

International doctoral candidates should normally apply while sufficient time remains in their doctorate.

FES advises doctoral applicants to submit their application approximately:

TWO YEARS BEFORE SUBMITTING THEIR DISSERTATION.

Friedrich Ebert Foundation Scholarship 2026 in Germany: Fully Funded Scholarships for International Students 🇩🇪

The foundation does not generally provide support solely for the final phase of a doctorate.

⏰ Is There an Age Limit?

FES states that there is:

NO GENERAL FIXED AGE LIMIT

for scholarship applications.

Applications are assessed based on the relevant scholarship criteria and circumstances.

📋 What Information Should Applicants Prepare?

Applicants should be ready to provide detailed information concerning:

🎓 ACADEMIC EDUCATION

📊 ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

🗣️ GERMAN-LANGUAGE ABILITY

🤝 VOLUNTEERING

🌍 COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

🏛️ POLITICAL / SOCIAL PARTICIPATION

and:

🎯 MOTIVATION FOR APPLYING.

Applicants who move forward in the selection process may be asked to provide additional supporting documentation and references.
