ANCA Nature Executive Fellowship 2027 Develops Africa-Focused Leaders
ANCA Nature Executive Fellowship 2027 Develops Africa-Focused Leaders. The ANCA Nature Executive Fellowship 2027 is now open for senior leaders who want to strengthen their ability to mobilise finance for nature, biodiversity and natural capital across Africa. Run by the African Natural Capital Alliance (ANCA), the 12-month executive fellowship combines academic learning, leadership development, coaching and the advancement of a real nature-based solutions project that each participant brings from their own organisation or wider professional ecosystem.
The 2027 fellowship includes compulsory residential modules at the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business, the University of Oxfordβs Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment, and the London School of Economics, followed by an immersive nature-finance field experience in an African country that will be confirmed later. Applications close on:
π 22 OCTOBER 2026
and are being reviewed on a:
ROLLING BASIS.
β οΈ Important Accuracy Note
The ANCA Nature Executive Fellowship should not be described as a fully funded travel fellowship.
The fellowship does fully cover:
PROGRAMME COSTS
ACCOMMODATION
and:
SOME MEALS
during the three residential modules.
However, fellows are responsible for paying their own:
βοΈ FLIGHTS
π VISA COSTS
π₯ TRAVEL INSURANCE
and:
π©Ί MEDICAL INSURANCE.
ANCA will provide selected fellows with:
VISA SUPPORT LETTERS
for the relevant modules, but the actual visa application and associated costs remain the responsibility of the fellow.
This programme is also designed for:
SENIOR EXECUTIVES AND SENIOR LEADERS
rather than students or entry-level professionals. Applicants need enough organisational authority to lead strategic nature and biodiversity initiatives and must bring a real nature-based solutions project that their organisation supports.

π± What Is the ANCA Nature Executive Fellowship?
ANCA Nature Executive Fellowship 2027 Develops Africa-Focused Leaders
The Nature Executive Fellowship is a strategic leadership programme created to develop:
AFRICAβS NEXT GENERATION OF NATURE FINANCE LEADERS.
It aims to equip senior decision-makers with the knowledge, confidence and networks required to influence how African institutions think about:
NATURE
BIODIVERSITY
FINANCE
INVESTMENT
and:
NATURAL CAPITAL.
The programme combines:
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
REAL-WORLD APPLICATION
and:
PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION.
Rather than completing classroom learning alone, fellows must work throughout the programme on a real:
NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS PROJECT
that can contribute to nature-positive outcomes in Africa.
ποΈ About the African Natural Capital Alliance
The African Natural Capital Alliance, commonly known as:
ANCA
is an African-led alliance of:
FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS
REGULATORS
PROJECT DEVELOPERS
and other stakeholders working across Africaβs:
NATURE FINANCE ECOSYSTEM.
Its work focuses on helping mobilise capital toward:
NATURE-POSITIVE DEVELOPMENT
and supporting African institutions to better recognise and manage:
NATURE-RELATED RISKS
DEPENDENCIES
OPPORTUNITIES
and:
INVESTMENT NEEDS.
The ANCA Secretariat is hosted by:
FSD AFRICA.
π€ Fellowship Partners
The 2027 fellowship is delivered in collaboration with:
π UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS
π UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD β SMITH SCHOOL OF ENTERPRISE AND THE ENVIRONMENT
and:
π LONDON SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS.
The programme is funded by the United Kingdomβs:
DEPARTMENT FOR ENVIRONMENT, FOOD AND RURAL AFFAIRS β DEFRA.
β³ How Long Is the Fellowship?
The programme runs for:
12 MONTHS.
During that period, fellows must complete:
THREE COMPULSORY IN-PERSON MODULES
alongside:
ONLINE SESSIONS
GROUP COACHING
and:
PROJECT DEVELOPMENT WORK.
The fellowship is designed to fit alongside a senior professional role, but applicants are expected to make a serious time commitment.
π’ Employer Support Is Mandatory
Applicants need formal support from their employer.
The employer must confirm in writing that the candidate will:
BE RELEASED FOR ALL THREE RESIDENTIAL MODULES
and:
BE SUPPORTED TO WORK ON THEIR FELLOWSHIP PROJECT.
This is not an optional recommendation.
It is part of the programmeβs formal application requirements.
β οΈ Missing a Module Can Be Costly
ANCA states that fellows who:
FAIL TO ATTEND A MODULE
or:
WITHDRAW FROM THE FELLOWSHIP
may be required to repay programme costs already incurred on their behalf.
Applicants should therefore only apply if they are confident they can complete the full programme.
π Module 1 β University of Cape Town
The first residential module will take place at the:
UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS
in:
πΏπ¦ CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA
from:
π 21β27 FEBRUARY 2027.
This module introduces fellows to the concepts and actors shaping Africaβs nature-finance landscape.
Key areas include:
NATURE SCIENCE FUNDAMENTALS
THE NATUREβFINANCE NEXUS
and:
THE FELLOWβS ROLE IN SYSTEMS CHANGE.
ANCA Nature Executive Fellowship 2027 Develops Africa-Focused Leaders
πΏ Nature Science Fundamentals
Executives need enough ecological understanding to make credible decisions involving nature.
The first module therefore helps fellows understand:
ECOSYSTEMS
BIODIVERSITY
NATURE-RELATED DEPENDENCIES
IMPACTS
and:
RISKS.
π° The NatureβFinance Nexus
Participants also explore how environmental change interacts with:
FINANCIAL SYSTEMS
INVESTMENT
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
and:
INSTITUTIONAL DECISION-MAKING.
π Systems Change
Fellows are encouraged to think beyond one project or organisation and understand how they can influence:
MARKETS
POLICY
CAPITAL ALLOCATION
and:
INSTITUTIONAL PRACTICE.
π Module 2 β Oxford and London
The second residential module takes place in:
π¬π§ OXFORD AND LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM
from:
π 10β14 MAY 2027.
Training is delivered through:
THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD
and:
THE LONDON SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS.
Fellows receive specialised instruction in:
NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS
ECOLOGICAL PRINCIPLES
NATURE DATA
and:
NATURE-ALIGNED FINANCIAL INSTRUMENTS.
π³ Nature-Aligned Financial Instruments
Participants can deepen their understanding of financial approaches that support:
BIODIVERSITY
NATURAL CAPITAL
and:
NATURE-POSITIVE DEVELOPMENT.
The broader programme also develops fellowsβ ability to understand structures such as:
BLENDED FINANCE
BIODIVERSITY CREDITS
and:
NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS FINANCE.
π Nature Data
Senior leaders increasingly need to understand how:
NATURE DATA
can influence:
RISK ASSESSMENT
INVESTMENT DECISIONS
STRATEGY
and:
DISCLOSURE.
π Module 3 β African Immersive Learning Experience
The third residential module runs:
π 9β13 AUGUST 2027
at an:
AFRICAN PROJECT LOCATION TO BE CONFIRMED.
This module provides:
HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE
with actual:
NATURE
and:
BIODIVERSITY FINANCE PROJECTS.
The aim is to move beyond theory and expose fellows to practical examples of how nature finance works in:
REAL AFRICAN CONTEXTS.
π» Online Coaching and Touchpoints
ANCA Nature Executive Fellowship 2027 Develops Africa-Focused Leaders
Between residential modules, fellows participate in:
ONLINE SESSIONS
and:
GROUP COACHING.
These sessions help participants:
REFINE THEIR PROJECTS
TEST ASSUMPTIONS
LEARN FROM PEERS
and:
TRANSLATE THEORY INTO IMPLEMENTATION.
π± A Nature-Based Solutions Project Is Required
One of the most important eligibility conditions is that every applicant must bring a:
REAL-WORLD NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS PROJECT.
The project should be:
REAL
RELEVANT
SUPPORTED BY THE APPLICANTβS ORGANISATION
and:
CAPABLE OF ADVANCING NATURE-POSITIVE OUTCOMES IN AFRICA.
π€ Applicant Must Be Able to Lead the Project
It is not enough to nominate an interesting institutional initiative.
The applicant must be:
IN A POSITION TO LEAD IT.
This is one reason the fellowship focuses on:
SENIOR DECISION-MAKERS.
π What Happens to the Project During the Fellowship?
Over 12 months, fellows will:
DEVELOP
TEST
and:
REFINE
their projects through academic learning, coaching and peer review.
By programme completion, ANCA expects each fellow to have:
A CREDIBLE, ACTIONABLE PLAN
capable of helping:
MOBILISE CAPITAL INTO NATURE IN AFRICA.
πΌ Could Projects Reach Investors?
Potentially.
ANCA says there may be opportunities for fellows to share their nature-based solutions projects with:
POTENTIAL INVESTORS.
This is not a guarantee of investment.
However, the programmeβs network can potentially help projects gain:
EXPOSURE
EXPERTISE
PARTNERSHIPS
and:
VISIBILITY.
π Project Confidentiality
Applicants may have projects containing:
COMMERCIALLY SENSITIVE INFORMATION.
ANCA Nature Executive Fellowship 2027 Develops Africa-Focused Leaders
ANCA says application-stage project information is viewed by:
THE SELECTION COMMITTEE
and:
ANCA SECRETARIAT.
During the fellowship, relevant project details may be shared with:
FELLOWS
PROGRAMME PARTNERS
and:
COACHES.
Applicants can indicate in their application if there are groups with whom they do not want project details shared.
π― Who Should Apply?
The programme is designed for:
EXECUTIVES
and:
SENIOR LEADERS
with established experience across:
SUSTAINABILITY
RESILIENCE
and:
LEADERSHIP.
Ideal candidates include people who:
HOLD SENIOR POSITIONS
CAN INFLUENCE ORGANISATIONAL STRATEGY
WANT TO DEEPEN THEIR NATURE-FINANCE EXPERTISE
and:
ARE ABLE TO LEAD A SIGNIFICANT NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS PROJECT.
π¦ Financial-Sector Leaders
The fellowship is especially relevant to senior professionals working in:
BANKING
INSURANCE
ASSET MANAGEMENT
INVESTMENT
CAPITAL MARKETS
and:
DEVELOPMENT FINANCE.
πΏ Conservation Leaders
Applicants may also come from:
CONSERVATION
ECOLOGY
BIODIVERSITY
and:
NATURAL-RESOURCE MANAGEMENT.
π» Technology Leaders
ANCA specifically aims for diversity across sectors, including:
TECHNOLOGY.
Technology executives working on:
NATURE DATA
CLIMATE ANALYTICS
BIODIVERSITY MONITORING
or:
NATURE-FINANCE INFRASTRUCTURE
may therefore be relevant candidates.
ποΈ Community Organisations
ANCA also includes perspectives from:
COMMUNITY ORGANISATIONS
when building a balanced fellowship cohort.
π Must You Live in Africa?
Not necessarily.
ANCAβs FAQ says the fellowship is designed for leaders whose:
WORK
and:
PROPOSED PROJECT
are focused on:
AFRICA.
This means an applicant may potentially live or work outside the continent while still being relevant if their professional influence and project are genuinely Africa-focused.
πΏπΌ Can Zimbabweans Apply?
Yes, potentially.
There is no published rule excluding Zimbabwean senior leaders.
A Zimbabwean applicant would need to demonstrate:
β Seniority and influence
β An Africa-focused nature or biodiversity project
β Employer support
β Capacity to attend all three modules
β English proficiency
and:
β A credible institutional commitment to nature or sustainability.
Zimbabwean leaders in sectors such as:
BANKING
INSURANCE
MINING
AGRICULTURE
CONSERVATION
ENERGY
INVESTMENT
or:
TECHNOLOGY
could potentially fit the programme if they satisfy the full criteria.

π¬π§ THE UNITED KINGDOM
and:

ANCA Nature Executive Fellowship 2027 Develops Africa-Focused Leaders
to support visa applications.

and:
LEAD SYSTEMS CHANGE.
π§ Understanding Nature-Related Risk

and:
CAPITAL ALLOCATION.
